A Place For Us

Fundraising to open an LGBTQ+ affirming homeless shelter in Lansing, MI

Our Mission

We are committed to helping LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones access housing, basic needs, resources, and services to resolve their housing crisis. Our mission is to help them avoid the harms of housing insecurity and empower them with the tools needed to live independently as their authentic selves.

Our Vision

To establish an LGBTQ+ affirming shelter to house individuals and families when they experience a housing crisis. With the explicit intent and purpose to address the chronic nature of homelessness, we will cover the gap during housing instability with the ultimate goal of getting people housed permanently.

Why do we need an LGBTQ+ affirming shelter?

1

LGBTQ+ adults experience over twice the risk of homelessness than their cis, straight counterparts.

[Williams Institute Law, LGBT People and Housing Affordability, Discrimination, and Homelessness]
2

In shelters unequipped to handle LGBTQ+ issues, at least 44% of transgender people have reported mistreatment, including being required to dress or present as the wrong gender.

[Weingart.org, Rejected and alone: LGBTQAI+ and homelessness]
3

Research suggests LGBTQ+ adults experiencing homelessness may utilize shelters less frequently than their cis, straight counterparts because of discriminatory experiences and a lack of inclusive programming.
